Many of us seem to use Winter as an excuse to reduce our training or sessions. While for some athletes this reduced volume through this period is true. For us runners we should consider either looking at alternative cross training options to keep the body active and muscles supple. I find that lengthy walking sessions as a replacement for my weekly long run works for me. Wearing the right type of clothing for the weather conditions is a no brainer, and being prepared should be planned.
Aside from the walking and home gym exercises, I make use of my road bike set up on a hybrid roller (front forks are fixed, rear wheel on rollers). Any session using this form of exercise is the equivalent of double that of running without the impact. To assist the session I play any of the numerous virtual cycling videos from You Tube.
So with these variety of options available there should be no excuses. Also remember that rest should be part of any athlete’s training. The body requires that times for repairing muscle tissue and well as giving the brain a mental break.
